A calm, Nordic palette with pops of bolder colour brings this hardworking home to life.

Suzy Hoodless was asked to add a stylish flourish to this four-storey Victorian townhouse in north London after it had been sensitively restored.

The owners, a family with three young children, wanted the interior to be a contemporary contrast with the classical architecture. It also had to be practical, child friendly and comfortable; a home to be used and enjoyed.

This is a hardworking home, so every piece of furniture has earned its place. Timeless Scandinavian designs like Fritz Hansen’s Favn sofa and Hans J Wegner’s Papa Bear chair are intended to be used every day, but have been upholstered in mood-lifting shades of ice blue and chartreuse.

We took inspiration from the client’s love of calm Nordic colours and midcentury design classics, painting most of the walls in Little Greene’s French Grey shade and adding drops of bolder colour and pattern around the rooms.

The mood shifts as you move around the house: the light-filled ground floor is modern and design-led, while the children’s rooms on the first floor are bright and playful, with graphic rugs and a cobalt-blue mural of trees and animals. On the top floor, a palette of soft greys gives a more grown-up feel to the master bedroom, bathrooms and dressing rooms.
